Dr. Barry Greene and Dr. Eric Pinnar of Advanced Weight Loss Solutions are now offering the ROSE procedure. ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal) is a new advanced incisionless procedure to restore weight loss and reduce weight regain.
Even the most successful gastric bypass patients can regain weight. More than 15 million people in the United States suffer from severe obesity. Every year more than 200,000 patients in the United States alone undergo gastric bypass surgery for the treatment of obesity. Research now shows approximately 20 percent of these patients will regain weight within a few years after the surgery. This weight "regain" usually results from gradually decreasing restriction, loss of feelings of fullness after small meals, and return of increased hunger. Decreased satiety and hunger occur as a result of the gradual enlargement of the surgically altered small stomach pouch and/or enlargement of the stoma (connection between the stomach and small intestine).
When the gastric bypass Roux-en-Y procedure is performed, the stomach and stoma are made very small, which slows the passage of food and creates a feeling of fullness after just a small amount of food is eaten. It is believed that when the stomach pouch and stoma gradually enlarge, the feeling of fullness is no longer present, patients can eat larger meals and weight regain may occur.
With weight regain, there is renewed risk for diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer. Drs. Greene and Pinnar now offer the new incision-free ROSE procedure to prevent ongoing weight gain and restore weight loss after gastric bypass surgery.
Until recently, there were no viable options for patients who are regaining weight after surgery. Surgical procedures to revise gastric bypass are very difficult to perform, carry a very high risk, have a long recovery, and are very expensive. Most bariatric surgeons don't perform revision surgery because the operative risk to the patient is too high. Now, with this new advanced procedure, we have a dramatically less invasive way to correct the key cause of weight regain with very little risk, and no significant recovery time.
Barry Greene, M.D. and Eric Pinnar, M.D. are 2 of approximately 20 surgeons in the world that are trained to perform the procedure, called "ROSE" (Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal).
As stated above, your stomach pouch or stoma (the connection between the pouch and small intestine) may have stretched in the years since your original surgery, reducing the feeling of fullness after you eat. This incisionless surgical procedure restores the size of the pouch and stoma similar to the original post-surgery proportions. Using a new advanced and specialized technology called EOS (EndoSurgical Operating System) that uses very precise surgical instruments, we can create and suture folds into the pouch to reduce its size (in volume) and at the stoma to reduce its size (in diameter). We perform the procedure entirely through the mouth without making any skin incisions. Because of the lack of external incisions, the ROSE procedure is expected to provide significant advantages to the patient including:
Maintaining weight loss after gastric bypass is vital to improve your health and reduce the co-morbidities associated with obesity such as Type II diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, respiratory disease, joint disease, and cancer.
